beware random wave crashes

My family has a knack for doing things without really knowing what we are getting ourselves in to. It's not that we don't plan per say. My type A/ West personality ensures that we've made basic logistical plans. And my mom does a good job planning things as well. It's just that when it comes to the activity portions of our trip we choose to do things if they meet some pretty basic criteria - namely the activity should be outside and/ or it should be a true activity (hiking/ biking/ bungee jumping/ zip-line). If an activity meets these criteria (something you can usually figure out from a picture or a one sentence description), then we simply "plan" to do it and don't bother researching any further.

So today when we arrived at Robber Beach to go for a "walk" I don't think any of expected what lay ahead. After walking 20-meters, we were smacked in the face by the sheer beauty of Robberg Beach.

After another 20-meters our casual "walk" turned into a full on "hike."

And just when we started to think that we had gotten ourselves into something we weren't quite prepared for (we had no water and it was going to be dark in 1.5 hours) the path opened up into rolling dunes that led to a gorgeous beach.

We couldn't dawdle long because the sun was setting and the tide was quickly covering up the path we were supposed to take. We took in the views, snapped a ton of pictures and made our way to the last leg of the trail; the slippery and cragged rocks.

Last view of the waves from my precarious perch on the rocks.

It was only after we reached the safety of the parking lot that we looked at the park map and saw the warning that read "Beware random wave crashes at all times." Like I said - we plan things, we just don't plan them very well.

But who cares. Our methods are sound(ish) and I"m pretty sure it's resulted in us taking many paths less travelled.
